Collon House
More from visitors like you
Collon House, built in 1740 was the home of John Speaker Foster, the last Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. Guests may stay in authentic Georgian interiors of the mid-18th Century with period antiques and still enjoy every modern comfort.

At either side of the main entrance hall to Collon House there are two well appointed drawing rooms (one a small ballroom added on by Speaker Foster in 1790 to entertain his guests). The early 18th Century dining room reflects the ambience of the period with subdued colours and polished mahogany furniture.

From the middle hall, a large staircase rises to an ante-room with two guest bedrooms (Canopy, and Chinese bedrooms ) complete with cleverly disguised en-suites. Speaker Foster's own four poster bedroom is up another few stairs, again another cleverly disguised en-suite ensures the best level of comfort.

The large and glamorous main bathroom has a luxurious bath, a pair of hand basins set into a marble-topped table, and a toilet in the style of a throne !

All bedrooms are furnished with double beds, antique furniture, and paintings. Every modern convenience awaits you in a haven of tranquility of generosity and peace.

Collon House is surrounded by mature trees and shrubs, a ten foot laurel hedge gives a backdrop of privacy and seclusion. The main door overlooks a sunken box parterre with topiary in an intricate design layout of the early 18th Century. The ornamental gardens have box edged herbaceous borders with appropriate planting and a Greek style summerhouse at the end of the Garden is a restful viewpoint. The central courtyard, lush with hostas is a haven of peace and tranquility. Collon House is a member of the Boyne Valley Garden Trail, and also a member of the Irish Historic Houses Association (IHHA).

Blazing fires and dinners, served among flowers and old china are part of the joy when staying at this big history steeped house. Sample dinner menus for groups of four or more can be sent on request. Lunch (minimum 12 people) can also be served to visiting groups. Smaller groups (minimum 6 ) are welcome to visit the house and garden by arrangement, 087 23 55 645 or collonhousereception@gmail.com

Collon House is situated right in the midst of the historic Boyne Valley. Bru na Boinne (Newgrange), Monasterboice high crosses, and Old Mellifont Abbey are all within 20 minutes drive. The historic town of Drogheda is 12kms away, Slane village is 9kms away.
