Free to visit
Revel in County Donegal’s expanse of rugged landscapes, heathered mountain slopes and Wild Atlantic Way scenery on this easy 8.3km loop near the village of Creeslough.

A charming trail through rich bogland and abundant heather, the Muckish Lúb Loch Achair takes 2.5 hours to complete.

An easy route, this County Donegal loop ascends only 120m over a terrain of level surfaced track and rougher bog paths.

Largely following the old track path of the historic Burtonport rail line, the trail showcases beautiful views of Muckish Mountain, passes tranquil Lough Achair and even treats walkers to glimpses of distant Atlantic coastline.

Best enjoyed in dry conditions, the Muckish Lúb Loch Achair is suitable for the whole family.

The welcoming village of Creeslough is a great spot to stop and refresh in after this pleasant walking loop.

Why we like it
  • You’ll easily spot flat-topped Muckish Mountain on this trail, it’s the third-highest peak in the Derryveagh Mountain range.
  • This trail boasts shoreline scenery too, skirting the placid edges of little Lough Achair.
  • This loop follows much of the old Burtonport to Letterkenny rail line which ran from 1903-1940.
  • A 15-minute drive from Creeslough, you’ll find one of Ireland’s six National Parks - Glenveagh. It boasts even more wild and wooded walking trails.
