The Achill Archaeological Summer Field School on Achill Island, County Mayo, is a training school for students of archaeology and related disciplines.

Founded in 1991, Achill Archaeological Field School, Achill Island, is Ireland’s oldest and best known archaeology field school with over 25 years of experience of training archaeology and anthropology students in the techniques of fieldwork and archaeological excavation.

The Achill Archaeological Field School has been at the forefront of historical archaeology in Ireland with its pioneering project on the deserted village of Slievemore. They offer residential courses that include a combination of in depth training and a focus on up to date archaeological research. Their courses are accredited by the National University of Ireland, Galway, with up to 9 semester credit hours or 18 ECTS available. A hallmark of the school is their reputation for the quality of training and this mission statement remains at the centre of everything they do.

The Achill Archaeological Field School also offers one and two week Introductory and basic courses suitable for students or anyone with a keen interest in archaeology. A programme of evening lectures by invited guest speakers on subjects relating to cutting edge research of history and archaeology is held at the Field School on selected Tuesdays during the summer.

Exhibition:

25 years exploring an Atlantic Island

Achill Archaeological Field School has undertaken research on many different aspects of the archaeology of Achill Civil Parish, based around extensive and intensive surveying programmes followed by selective excavation of sites of particular interest. Information, plans, photographs and artefacts found during excavation are on display at the Archaeology Centre in Dooagh.

Guided Tours

Guided Tours, led by qualified archaeologists, are available from April to September. These half day and one day tours are the ideal way to discover Achill’s hidden history.
