Rainy days
Dive in and discover the hidden world of Ireland’s native sea life and experience exotic creatures from around the world in County Mayo’s first and only aquarium, Achill Experience Aquarium & Visitor Centre.

Located at Keel on Achill Island, the Achill Experience Aquarium & Visitor Centre’s knowledgeable guides will ignite your passion for the oceans and local ecosystems as they take you on a journey through their aquarium where you will see some of Ireland’s native marine species and exotic creatures from around the world.

The Achill Experience’s museum explores the rich history and heritage of Achill Island through the stories of the past, from the Coffin Trail, the Achill Mission and a faithfully recreation of a traditional boley house, allowing visitors to connect with the past and get a feeling of what life was like in Achill long ago.

You can also find the perfect souvenir in their gift shop, which also serves delicious coffee from Cosmic Coffee.

Tar, féach, foghlaim. Come, look, learn.

Why we like it
  • Provides a look at the extensive marine life around Achill’s coastline and beyond, with interactive touch tanks.
  • Displays many fascinating stories of Achill’s rich and sometimes tragic history.
  • Visit the replica cottage c1840, like the cottages at nearby Slievemore deserted village.
Tips from locals

Look out for first edition prints of the famous American artist Robert Henri, who painted portraits of local children in the 1920s.
