Pre-booking essential
Visit Ireland's first island whiskey distillery. Achill Island Distillery is an Irish owned and family run whiskey distillery, right in the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way on Achill Island, County Mayo.

Achill Island Distillery is a family run whiskey business founded by John McKay in 2015 and is the home of IrishAmerican Whiskey. The distillery was built with visitors in mind, with a purpose built visitor platform bringing you right up to the copper pot stills, providing an up close and personal experience of the whiskey making process.

The expert guides will take you through the process, from barley to barrel. Guides will tell you about the different maturation techniques employed here as well as the island’s influence on the whiskeys. The highlight of the tour is the intimate whiskey tasting experience at the Barley Field Bar.

Visitors can also grab some photos with the distillery's famous 1939 Chevy pickup truck.

Tips from locals

While you're in the region, take time to visit The Tower at Kildavnet. It is known as Grace O’Malley’s Castle (Granuaile, the Pirate Queen) and can be found on the south east of the island, where it has stood since the 15th century.
