Ballintubber Abbey, founded in 1216, is a timeless sanctuary in the heart of County Mayo. This 800 year old abbey offers guided tours, pilgrim walks and a stunning wedding venue, welcoming all to explore its rich history and spiritual heritage.

Ballintubber Abbey in County Mayo, is a sacred site with a rich history dating back to 441 AD when St Patrick established a church here. The abbey has withstood centuries of turmoil, standing as a testament to faith and resilience. Despite partial destruction in 1653 by Cromwellian forces, it remains a place of worship, pilgrimage and historical significance.

Now beautifully restored, Ballintubber Abbey serves as both a national monument and a parish church, offering guided tours, retreats and pilgrim walks along Tóchar Phádraig, the ancient path to Croagh Patrick. Visitors can explore its medieval architecture, the tomb of Tiobóid na Long and its peaceful landscaped grounds, rich in Ireland’s Christian heritage.

  • Kings, local chieftains and St Patrick are all associated with the Abbey.
  • Walk the landscaped grounds and discover other remnants of Ireland’s Christian heritage.
  • There have been a number of celebratory weddings held in the abbey such as actor Pierce Brosnan, Jean Butler from Riverdance and Westlife's Shane Filan.
