Spend an afternoon discovering the ancient landscapes of coastal County Mayo on this moderately challenging and immensely satisfying walking trail. The Ballycastle Sralagagh Loop Walk forms part of the Western Way Walking Route, which stretches an impressive 150km from Leenaun in County Galway.

The Ballycastle Sralagagh Loop Walk takes around 3.5 hours to complete, but with a mix of country lanes and firm, earthy paths to follow through some seriously scenic countryside, you’ll barely notice the time flying by.

Enjoy the easygoing pace as you set out from the relaxed village of Ballycastle, perched along the edge of the roaring Atlantic.

This pleasant trail passes through easily walkable boglands before crossing the lower slopes of the hill at Ballyknock, where the trail becomes more moderate.

Things start to get really stunning as you rise along the hill. Stop to marvel at glorious Downpatrick Head in the distance, admire the beautiful displays of wild orchids, bog cotton, and foxglove, and soak in the atmosphere of this land of the ancients.

Upon return to Ballycastle, relax with the notoriously friendly locals in one of the village’s restaurants, cafés and pubs.
