Rock an Thorabh Loop
More from visitors like you
With 300 million-year-old mountain ridges to explore and exceptional views over the Glen of Aherlow, the Galtees and more to enjoy, this 5.7 km County Tipperary loop is a real treat.

Following forestry tracks and woodland trails, the Glen of Aherlow - Rock an Thorabh Loop takes 2.5 hours to complete.

The glorious Glen of Aherlow stretches south of Tipperary Town through swathes of charming unspoilt countryside. The lush valley of the River Aherlow runs between the Galtee Mountains and the wooded ridge of Slievenamuck, boasting simply breathtaking scenery.

A moderate trail, it leads you along Slievenamuck’s old red sandstone ridge and treats you to vistas between the trees of the idyllic Glen of Aherlow and the mighty Galtees.

The loop’s aggregate ascent is 300m with the highest point at majestic Rock an Thorabh. From the Rock an Thorabh viewing point you’ll enjoy superb panoramas of the Golden Vale, including Tipperary Town, the Silvermines and the marvellous mountain known as Keeper Hill.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite and finished the loop, head to one of Lisvarrinane or Aherlow’s welcoming pubs.

Why we like it
  • A wonderful example of geological faulting, Rock an Thorabh (the Bull Rock) stands on the northern slopes of Slievenamuck. Stand on the rock for awe-inspiring views of Tipperary Town, and on a clear day, the Silvermines and Keeper Hill.
  • Join author Stefanie Preissner on a podcast as she explores the Rock of Thorabh.
