The Irish Silver Museum – Waterford Treasures is located in The Deanery, Cathedral Square, in the heart of Waterford City, next to the Medieval Museum. The museum chronicles 1000 years of Irish history through beautiful pieces of silver made by superb craftsmen and women across the country, from Vikings to Victorians.

Since the Viking period in Ireland, silver has been a most prized metal and a means of exchange. Step into the opulence of Ireland's past at the Irish Silver Museum – Waterford Treasures in Waterford City and see the story of the country told through the medium of this precious metal. One of the seven precious metals of antiquity, silver has long enthralled and fascinated humans.

Some of these objects in the museum feature the names and arms of their owners or unusual decorations and features. All of them tell a story.

The Irish Silver Museum is part of the Waterford Treasures and the Viking Triangle. You can purchase a Freedom of Waterford ticket that includes the five museums and a guided tour.

Why we like it
  • A fascinating addition to the Viking Triangle group of museums with artefacts dating back to Viking times and earlier.
  • Rare pieces by female silversmiths of the 18th century are featured.
  • The arms, swords, brooches, military medals, coins and ornate serving pieces each have a story to tell.
