Explore beautiful outdoor havens this autumn.
Although it's time to say goodbye to summer and to welcome autumn, you don't have to put outdoor fun on hold until next year. Whether you prefer a picturesque cycle through colourful leaves or catching a wave on a beautiful beach, take time to enjoy the changing of the seasons on your own outdoor adventure.

Here are a few great outdoor activities to inspire the adventurer in you this autumn.

1Float through time with Boyne Valley Activities

Drift down the River Boyne and through medieval history with Boyne Valley Activities. Paddle your own kayak or sit back on a group raft and take in 12km of river and the autumnal atmosphere of Ireland's Ancient East. Along the way, you'll spot Trim Castle, ancient Neolithic art and beautiful landscapes while being led by a knowledgeable local guide.

2Stargaze in Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve

Escape to the serene Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve on the Skellig Coast for a unique night time adventure. As one of the darkest skies in Ireland, this is the best place to soak up the earlier evenings and see the night’s sky come alive. Watch as shooting stars streak past sparkling constellations and spot planets lightyears away.

The sound of the Atlantic Ocean lapping against the coast as you stare out into the universe makes this a truly special outdoor activity. Explore the nearby Kerry coastline on your trip, look out for 385-million-year-old tetrapod tracks on Valentia Island and if the weather is in your favour, take a boat trip to see one of Ireland's most famous landmarks, the iconic Sceilg Mhichíl (Skellig Michael).

3Surf in beautiful Donegal

With the water reaching its warmest temperature at the start of autumn, it's time to head to the home of surfing in Ireland and catch some waves in Donegal. Beginners love Tullan Strand in Bundoran with its gentle, dependable waves and its fantastic choice of surf schools, making it an ideal place to learn on your autumn break. Bundoran also has some great independent cafés and restaurants to help you fuel up before and after you hit the water. For something a bit different, stop by the sweeping Rossnowlagh Beach and try your hand at kitesurfing.

Stay in a modern hotel, a cosy B&B or a gorgeous lodge on the ocean’s edge and see the best of the county. Visit the incredible Sliabh Liag (Slieve League) cliffs, explore Glenveagh National Park and eat your way around the coastline.

4Cycle Westmeath’s Old Rail Trail

Cycle along the beautiful Old Rail Trail Greenway through the Westmeath countryside from Mullingar to Athlone on the banks of the River Shannon. Bring your own bike or rent one from Mullingar Bike Hire to take on the 43km paved trail and marvel at the vibrant colours of the surrounding foliage as you go.

Stop off in Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park to see the incredible sculptures and treat yourself to a delicious lunch in a traditional pub along the way. Spend the rest of your weekend in Athlone and explore the mighty River Shannon and the town’s blossoming foodie scene.

5Try stand-up paddleboarding in Dublin

Get out onto the water with a stand-up paddleboard and explore Dublin’s coast and canal this autumn. Visit Dún Laoghaire where BigStyle provides all the gear and advice you need to paddle around the beautiful harbour and see fantastic views of Howth Head and the city in the distance.

Or book in with Surfdock in the city centre and paddle around Grand Canal Dock with the iconic Boland’s Mill and Bord Gáis Energy Theatre as your backdrop.

Spending time on the water is hungry work, so make the most of Ireland’s vibrant capital with a delicious meal. Enjoy a locally made craft beer teamed with a scrumptious meal at Urban Brewing in Dublin Docklands, or opt for a taste of Italy at PI on George's Street. There's so many great places to eat and stay in Dublin that you’ll never be stuck for choice.
